WHAT ABOUT LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® MAKES IT A POWERFUL TOOL?
Drawing on ideas from the fields of psychology and behavioural science, LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® is a powerful tool that focuses on both divergence and converge to allows teams to initiate change and improvement and even to create something radically new. It takes brainstorming, ideation, strategy, and visioning to the next level.
Our hands are connected to between 70 and 80 percent of our brain cells. Our brains are limited in how much information they can consciously handle at one time - often referred to as our 'working memory'. But with the assistance of all the neural connections in our hands, we "know" a great deal more at any given moment that we previously thought. This method, through the assistance of our hands via building, taps into a highly significant part of one's subconscious thinking.
The challenge most organizations face is that they have unique business problems they want their internal staff to resolve. It's often one individual, a small team, or perhaps some consultants not too familiar with the business who are assigned to this. They are asked to solve complex 3D problems using traditional 2D solutions (write a strategy document, use a whiteboard, come up with a solution etc). This normally involves limited brainstorming and filling out a template with the requisite information with the help of minimal discussions. The results are often poor and the strategy remains on a shelf or in a folder.
With LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY®, all strategy becomes a live 3D immersive experience where there's full participation of everyone involved. The best organizations understand that leaders do not have all the answers, and prefer to tap into the collective knowledge of its people.
WHAT IS THE IDEAL GROUP SIZE FOR A LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® WORKSHOP?
Processes based on the LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® method are for groups and teams of any size. Any workshop using the LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® method and materials requires a trained and certified facilitator. Though the ideal size for an in-depth workshop is for 6-12 individuals per one facilitator, sessions may be developed for conferences/leadership retreats/meetings with a large number attendees/groups (anywhere from 50 attendees and up). However, with larger groups and shorter sessions - the main outcomes revolve around awareness.
WHAT IS THE IDEAL LENGTH OF A TYPICAL LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® WORKSHOP?
Every single session is completely customized and designed for specific outcomes and results. In addition, the nature of the tools used in each session are unique. There's no 'one size fits all'.
Rob has designed and delivered full day sessions for leadership retreats, executive meetings, and team-building exercises. In addition he has also designed shorter sessions due to demand from conference organizers and associations who are interested in having their participants experience LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY®. Ideally, the minimum length of a typical beneficial session is approximately 3 to 5 hours. Sessions over 3 hours create powerful outcomes. We do not recommend workshops for greater than 1.5 to 2 days due to the intensity of the thinking and subsequent dialogue.
The most results-based sessions typically are a minimum of 3-4 hours
IS THIS JUST ANOTHER WAY OF DOING A WORKSHOP?
Absolutely not. One cannot compare the outdated traditional ways of holding meetings and solving problems with that of a LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® session. Traditional methods for solving challenges result in two-dimensional results where participation and buy-in from participants is not always guaranteed.
LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® sessions are completely designed to harness the power of working with your hands to help individuals, teams, and organizations reach their objectives and goals through an innovative way of thinking that has creativity built into it. It leverages all three styles of learning (visual, auditory, and kinaesthetic) while allowing people to formulate ideas, solutions, and concepts in a completely safe environment. It is not taking the the traditional way we do things and just using LEGO bricks to accomplish an objective. It is an established method that is tried and tested in the delivery of outcomes. The method has key core processes, application techniques, and is based on the belief that everyone has something unique and valuable to contribute.
The sessions are not oriented as a way to bring 'fun' into the workplace. Though the experience of creating and using our hands is a fun and rewarding experience in contrast to how normal outdated meetings are run, the power is in the method combined with an expertly designed session.
WHAT IS THE 'TYPICAL' Reaction from participants during a Session?
Sessions carefully designed, crafted, and delivered by Rob Oddi, expert in the LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® method and materials result in an extremely high level of engagement, interactivity, and fun. The sessions are designed to produce content-rich outcomes and results. Participants become fully engaged as all of his sessions appeal to all learning styles (visual, auditory, kinaesthetic). Participants often realize 'aha' moments and insights and become fully immersed into a richer, more three-dimensional means of ideation and communication.
CAN ANYONE DESIGN AND RUN A LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® session/workshop?
For optimal results a session should be run by someone with both education and expertise in the method and materials as well with speaking/facilitation experience coupled with extensive team dynamics/business consulting experience The success of a session is completely dependant on how it is designed and how it is delivered.
As there are a multitude of ways to design and deliver a session using the LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® method and materials, careful design and timing is key to sustain the level of enthusiasm, focus, and engagement required for a session that will deliver on expectations.
